1. Warm up your body, and then your voice
Aerobic exercise is a great way to warm up before singing.  When your body is energized your voice responds faster.  You will know when you are warm when you start to feel you are about to sweat.
2. Release the tension in your body
Tension is your worst enemy.  Yoga, deep stretching will help you find where you are tense. Don't hold your breath and push past your limit.  Exhale gently dep into each stretch.  Your mouth and jaw will open and close with ease along with your facial muscles, lips tongue, neck and shoulders will move without tension.  Your eyes also should be relaxed. 
3. Breathe naturally when you sing
When we read, our body has been trained to know how much air we need to read a sentence, Actively. taking a breath can cause tension in your chest, shoulders and neck.  Think your thought and you will have enough air you need to sing.
4. Don't hold your breath
Read any sentence, notice that you don't hold your breath, and you are exhaling while you speak.  When you sing a sentence, it should feel the same.  If you take a breath and held it before you begin singing, you will feel tension. Say what you have to sing  (on pitch).
5. Keep your mouth open
If you are holding your breath, you will notice your diaphragm is helping you out breathing in and out.  Your mouth should open enough for proper vowel forming.
6. Stay relaxed
Singing involves your whole body, your jaw, tongue, lips, neck and your head and breath. Singing should be easy if you are doing it right..
7. Speak on pitch to sing on pitch
Singing is similar to speaking, know your larynx, which is where your vocal cords are located.  Know what it does when you yawn, when you swallow, when you hum etc. When you speak, it should do the same when you sing. Remember to RELAX!.
8. Be invested in the song
Whether you are singing or speaking, own it, know it, understand it.  This makes the performance believable and allows you voice to relax and being able to show your love for vocal music.
9. Sing with your entire body
Remember that singing is physical, be in control of you body
10. Remember that high notes go down, not up
Think of your voice being like 2 people on a see saw, if both are being nice, no one gets hurt and it is an enjoyable time.
11. Do vocal warm down exercises
Try humming from a comfortable high pitch and slide down, has a calming effect for you and your tired vocal chords.
12. Work with your director and fellow singers
It's safer, more fun, and you will learn to sing faster.
